Atlantic Alliance Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has called a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council for January 10 to discuss the latest Russian bombing of the country, which has invaded since February 24, 2022.
This was announced by the official representative of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Dylan White, on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
A request to hold a meeting of the body, the purpose of which is to bring Ukraine closer to NATO, was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmitry Kuleba.
The NATO-Ukraine Council was born in July 2023. This was one of the conclusions of the Atlantic Alliance summit, organized on the territory of Lithuania, with the aim of bringing military decisions closer to the military-political organization, of which Portugal and Ukraine are also part. a country that wants to join but is not yet in a position to do so, especially because it is at war.
Russia recently carried out the largest explosions in Ukraine in the past year, affecting the country’s two main cities.
Attacks using drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) have increased, as has their intensity.
The year begins full of uncertainty for Ukraine, which, despite hearing again and again that it has unequivocal support from NATO countries, is seeing the erosion of the country’s financial, political and military support.
In the European Union (most countries are members of NATO), the Hungarian blockade reigned until support of 50 billion euros was approved; the Ukrainian Armed Forces may not be able to withstand attacks by Russian troops.
At the same time, the 27 members of the European Community bloc may not receive the million artillery ammunition promised in March.
Across the Atlantic, in the United States, support for Washington is virtually nil, despite the White House insisting it remains on the side of the Moscow-occupied country for nearly two years.
The problem is in the North American Congress, where congressmen are worn out, especially Republicans, and attention is focused domestically on the presidential election in November and externally on the conflict in the Middle East that began between Israel and the Islamist movement. but tensions spread throughout the region, with much of the international community criticizing Tel Aviv’s military decisions and civilian organizations believing that genocide of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip was at stake.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has spent the past year insisting on the country’s need to obtain combat aircraft, namely the F-16 (also used by Portugal), but pilot training is still ongoing and the delivery of the aircraft has taken longer than Ukraine wanted. (partly due to initial skepticism from countries supporting Ukraine).
If the first year was a year of resistance by Ukrainian forces, the second was characterized by analysts and military officials as a year of stalemate, with few gains and less territory annexed by Russia reclaimed by Ukrainian forces.
However, in recent weeks, troops loyal to the Kremlin have stepped up their bombing of residential buildings and critical infrastructure.
Russian President Vladimir Putin justified the latest attacks as retaliation for the bombing of the Russian city of Belgorod.
