General Qasem Soleimani, died in 2020 after an American airstrike in Baghdad. Soleimani was very close to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and was one of the most powerful men in the country. Qassem Soleimani, responsible for several Iranian military and espionage activities abroad, was already the target of several assassination attempts before he was executed in the Iraqi capital.
Qassem Soleimani led the Quds Force, a special unit of the Revolutionary Guard, from 1998 until the day of his death and was considered the brains of the country’s military and geopolitical strategy.
By becoming the head of Al-Quds Force, Soleimani tried to increase Iran’s influence in the Middle East. It conducted covert operations, supplied weapons to allies and developed networks of militias loyal to Iran.
Soleimani expanded Shiite Iran’s military presence in Syria, where he orchestrated an offensive by Bashar al-Assad’s government against Sunni rebel groups during the civil war.
In Iraq, he supported a Shiite militant group that helped fight the Islamic State when it occupied the northern city of Mosul.
Charismatic and often evasive, the commander was a standard for some and hated by others. It has even been portrayed in news reports, documentaries and even mentioned in pop songs.
According to the BBC, the general rose to prominence in his final years, spending much of his time leading covert operations.
This Wednesday, more than a hundred people were killed and many more injured in two explosions near a cemetery in the Iranian city of Kerman, where a ceremony was taking place to commemorate the death of Soleimani.
