A 43-year-old foreign national, wanted in Italy for more than eight years for drug trafficking, was arrested on Saturday at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport, the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) said in a statement today.
“Yesterday, the SEF detained at Humberto Delgado Airport a foreign citizen aged 43, under which a European warrant of arrest and arrest issued by Italy was pending for crimes related to drug trafficking. A passenger wanted by the authorities for more than eight years was discovered during a documentary control carried out at the boarding gate using an “Italian identity card”, which raised suspicions of fraud,” the SEF said in a statement.
According to the statement, the “detailed analysis” of the SEF experts concluded that the identity document “was fake” but “despite this, the citizen continued to claim that he is the person whose identity was established in the presented fake document” .
According to the SEF, a subsequent investigation revealed the detainee’s true identity, as well as the existence of an “arrest and arrest warrant for extradition” that hung over the suspect.
“Contact with the Italian authorities was facilitated by the fact that an Italian expert from Frontex worked with SEF at the Lisbon airport. [Agência da União Europeia para controlo de fronteiras] which immediately established contacts with its services in Italy.
The suspect will be present on Monday at the Court of Appeal in Lisbon for the first judicial questioning about the use of coercive measures.
