The opening of the floodgates at the Mabubas Dam has flooded about 300 homes and affected more than 200 families already resettled by authorities in the Angolan province of Bengo, a local fire service source said on Friday.
According to the head of the Civil Protection and Fire Safety Service, Bengo Faustino Sebastian, after the opening of the two gates of the Mabubas Dam, due to a significant increase in the amount of water in the Kwanza and Dande rivers, caused by heavy rains recently.
Faustino Sebastian said some citizens prefer to stay with family members who live in other areas and guarantee their safety.
“The community kitchen was created to provide assistance to the population, since the largest number of people of concern to the authorities are minors, pregnant women and the elderly,” Faustino Sebastian said in a statement to Angolan Public Television.
In addition to the flooded neighborhoods, access to the Bengo Polytechnic Institute, Quimamueño Normal School and Caboxa Penitentiary was also restricted.
Angolan authorities have also planned the release of water from the Lauca dams in Malanje province and Cambambe in Kwanza Norte province due to natural changes in the flow of the Kwanza River.
