The 28-year-old footballer died today in Mértola (Beja) after suffering a cardiovascular arrest while playing in a senior Beja County Championship match.
According to the Lusa agency of the subregional command for emergencies and civil protection of Baixo Alentejo, the alarm was raised at about 15:20 after the player fell lifeless on the field of the municipal stadium of Mértola.
“Nothing made him foresee…This just reminds me of the Feher case“, said Albernoense FC President Pedro Jonas, as quoted by Correio do Alentejo.
In a statement, Pedro Jonas describes the player as “an extraordinary person, humble, hardworking” and adds that Gefrison is “more than an athlete, a friend whom we have all lost and for whom we will always cherish all his teachings.”
“This is the saddest day in the life of our club, but we are confident that we will unite in memory of our Gefrison and make him proud!” he says.
It also said an autopsy would be performed on Tuesday.
