Nine visitors to a nursing home in Vila Nova de Puares were attacked with diapers and “daily” spanked by a 43-year-old staff member who will now be tried in a Coimbra court. The defendant, who was removed from the facility, is charged with nine counts of abuse.
The attacked users were in the care of the institution’s staff (Irmandade de Nossa Senhora das Necessidades). In addition to their advanced age, the oldest of whom was 99 years old, they all suffered from disabling diseases.
The facts date back to 2022. According to the indictment, the victims were mistreated while the then-employee was on duty. The order describes situations where they were attacked with diapers and hit in the face. There have also been cases where the defendant is accused of punching him and trying to throw wet towels. One of the victims was knocked to the ground and the other was attacked with sneakers.
The order also states that whenever the users were sleeping, the man would place his fingers on their noses to force them to wake up. Concerned about their hygiene, he is accused of holding them with excessive force, turning them sharply, without paying attention to their weak position. For those who had to be syringed fed, the defendant is accused of emptying the entire contents at once without waiting for them to be swallowed, which in some cases caused choking.
