Destroying the energy system and depleting Ukraine’s resources is what Russia wants to achieve during the winter, German experts told the Rheinische Post on January 6.
The publication says that in Germany, reports of Russia’s latest attacks on Ukraine have raised fears of a possible Ukrainian defeat due to insufficient Western support for kyiv. Pressure on German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has increased from all sides.
“Russia feels its strength thanks to the weakness of the West”– Roderich Kiesewetter, member of the CDU opposition party, accuses the Berlin government. Kiesewetter, a former Bundeswehr colonel and military envoy of his party, demands that Germany reconsider its position on the Taurus cruise missiles.
The politician hopes that with the help of these missiles Ukraine will be able to destroy the Crimean Bridge. It is supported by deputies from parties included in the ruling coalition: SPD, FDP and Union 90/Greens.
So far, the federal government maintains its previous position that it is impossible to supply German cruise missiles to Ukraine. “At this point everything possible has already been supplied and stocks are constantly monitored.””, government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit rejects accusations of insufficient support for Ukraine.
Hebestreit explains that Berlin, like the entire Western military alliance, is guided by the principle that “Germany and NATO should not participate in the war” and supplies are limited by this principle. The Rheinische Post notes that these principles may change due to new reports on the DPRK’s arms supply to Russia.
