Eight people drowned and another went missing during the festive season in Mozambique, with authorities announcing an investigation into the cases, an official said on Wednesday.
Five of the drownings occurred on three beaches in the province of Inhambane in southern Mozambique, and the rest in the provinces of Gaza, Sofala and Cabo Delgado, said Elvira, director of maritime inspection and communications at the National Institute of the Sea (Inamar). Matola told the media, pointing to a report made by the institution.
“According to the information we have, it was actually a lack of swimming skills. [que causou as mortes]but we need to find out,” said Elvira Matola.
According to the person in charge, most of the victims are children, so the maritime institute will conduct a study of the situation in order to then conduct lectures on this topic in schools.
According to the same source, Inamar and several other Mozambican organizations carried out an operation to prevent deaths in Mozambican waters during the festive season, operating on at least 62 beaches in the country.
