Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday called for expanded membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in a message to the leaders of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, who, along with Russia, make up the organization.
“The Union has every chance to become one of the independent, self-sufficient and powerful poles of a multipolar world formation, to be a center of attraction for all independent states that share our values,” he stressed in his address published on the Kremlin website.
Putin noted that since its creation in 2015, the volume of trade within the Union has increased by 60%, and with the outside by 46%, to $776 billion.
Putin stressed that one of “the most important strategic priorities for joint work should be the development of the technological potential of the EAEU countries,” in which Russia is chairing this year.
According to the Russian leader, one of the tasks of the CES is “reducing the economic risks for mutual trade created by the use of foreign currencies and payment systems.”
Therefore, he added, Moscow considers the connection of partners to the Financial Communications Transfer System of the Bank of Russia “an indispensable condition” for ensuring the stability of settlements between members of the EAEU.
“The solution of all these tasks will require the improvement of the supranational institutions that we have created, primarily the Eurasian Economic Commission,” Putin said, calling for more powers to be delegated to the commission.
At the same time, he stressed that “all important decisions should be made, as before, by consensus.”
