Amazon will lay off hundreds of employees at Prime Video and MGM Studios after identifying “opportunities to reduce or suspend investments,” according to an internal email.
“We have identified opportunities to reduce or stop investment in certain areas, while […] we are focused on content initiatives and products with greater impact,” said Mike Hopkins, the company’s head of streaming and studios, in an email quoted by Bloomberg.
Over the past year, Amazon has reviewed its business to improve its offerings of movies, live shows and sports to create personalized entertainment for customers.
Mike Hopkins said affected workers will be notified between this Wednesday and the end of the week.
Amazon-owned streaming and video game platform Twitch is also preparing to lay off 500 employees.
Twitch executive chairman Dan Clancy has already admitted that even with the cuts, the platform is still “significantly larger than necessary given the size of the business.”
Companies such as Walt Disney and Paramount Global have also announced layoffs.
