International architecture firm Elevated Media & Tessa Chrisp have built a children’s learning center in Manurewa, South Auckland in New Zealand, focused on connecting with the earth. On January 20, the Designboom portal writes about this.
The concept of the Gaia forest center is based on nature and the environment, both in the location of an educational institution, the main objective of which is formed within the practice of environmental education, and in the application of sustainable construction methods.
“The center’s design reflects an earth-centered philosophy, embracing a biophilic form that blends sustainability with a light-hearted approach to the environment to keep children healthy and connected to nature.” share the design team.
The building has the shape of a leaf in plan, the roof structure also repeats this shape. Around the main volume are curved galleries. Slabs of wood strongly attached to each other form the facade.
The structure is supported by large wooden columns and extends over two levels. Large windows and doors open into the preschool, creating direct visual contact between the interior and the natural surroundings of the building.
