A Faro court has ruled that a doctor arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of corruption in issuing false death certificates is prohibited from practicing and must report to the authorities, it was announced this Thursday.
“The detainee was subject to coercive measures to obstruct his professional activities and periodic reporting to the police,” said a statement published on the website of the Faro District Prosecutor’s Office.
The prosecutor’s office explains that the detainee is suspected of issuing several death certificates in Loule, in exchange for receiving sums of money, since the beginning of 2020, “forcing them to falsely state that the cause of death is known.”
“The goal is to prevent a forensic autopsy of the deceased from being carried out by order of the prosecutor’s office and thereby speed up the funeral,” the Faro prosecutor’s office said.
According to the Judicial Police (PJ), which is investigating the case, the aim was to prevent judicial intervention or forensic examination.”
According to PJ, a forensic autopsy is required by law “whenever the cause of death is questionable, ignored, violent, or a crime is suspected.”
The Department of Investigation and Criminal Affairs (DIAP) of Faro is in charge of the process.
