The fire that broke out this Thursday at the São Luis Morumbi hospital, located in the elegant Morumbi district in the south of the Brazilian city of São Paulo, ended in the death of an elderly patient hospitalized. Another 47 patients admitted to this hospital had to be transferred to other health care facilities.
The 94-year-old woman suffered a heart attack shortly after the incident began, likely due to fear and stress when she noticed the fire. At least two intensive care units (ICUs) had to be emptied due to the thick layer of smoke that blanketed the area.
Upon the arrival of firefighters, the fire was quickly localized and then extinguished; no other serious casualties were recorded, except for the deceased elderly woman. Meanwhile, however, dozens of patients hospitalized in San Luis, people of all ages and even parents with children in their arms, gathered on the sidewalk in front of the house, all very scared, until some were able to return to their rooms and others were transferred. to other hospitals.
Apparently, the cause of the fire was a malfunction of electronic equipment. The damage caused flames to break out and soon after smoke engulfed parts of the hospital, forcing evacuation measures to ensure the safety of patients and staff.
