The Nipah virus vaccine, which began being administered this Wednesday at the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, is based on the same technology used to prevent Covid-19, according to Reuters.
Clinical trial participants over the past week received a vaccine against a virus that causes severe headaches, fever, breathing problems and swelling of brain cells, the agency said.
The formulation of the drug is similar to that used to fight Covid-19 by AstraZeneca and the Serum Institute of India. The virus, which WHO describes as fatal in more than 70% of infections, still does not have a cure or any vaccine. No cases of the disease have been reported in Portugal yet.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the infection, reported in Malaysia, Bangladesh, India and Singapore, appears in humans through food contamination, direct contact with pets and infected people, with fox bats being the main vectors. .
