British maritime security company Ambrey said this Friday that Houthi rebels mistakenly attacked a tanker carrying Russian oil during a missile attack off the coast of Yemen, Reuters reported.
“The commander reported that the missile fell into the water at a distance of 400-500 meters, followed by three small boats,” the UKMTO said in an advisory note, adding that there were no casualties or damage.
Embry also says that “this was the second tanker that was mistakenly targeted by the Houthis while transporting Russian oil.”
Yemen’s Houthi militants, who control much of Yemen, have fired wave after wave of drones and explosive missiles at Western commercial ships in the Red Sea since November 19 in what they say is a protest against Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.
The US and UK also carried out air and sea strikes against Houthi military targets in Yemen overnight. Russia, an ally of Iran and a partner of major Arab powers, condemned the attacks and called for an urgent convening of the UN Security Council.
