The National Emergency Management and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) this Saturday issued a warning to the population regarding the risk of flooding on the continent, given the forecast of rain in the next 48 hours.
The ANEPC warning said the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecast rain, sometimes heavy and persistent, in the northern and central regions over the next 48 hours, and also in the Alentejo from Monday.
During this period, given the worsening adverse weather conditions – heavy rain, increased winds and rough seas – Civil Protection warns of the forecast of “flooding in urban areas caused by the accumulation of rainwater due to clogging of drainage systems or coastal waters.” overflows,” as well as the occurrence of floods, “intensified by the overflow of the beds of some watercourses, rivers and streams.”
ANEPC indicates the risk of urban flooding in the Tagus river basin and increased inflows into the Vez, Lima rivers in the north and the Aguieira, Raiva and Fronjas systems in the Mondego basin, Central Region.
Starting from Sunday, an increase in flows is expected in the lower reaches of the Canisada and Vilarinho das Furnas, in the Cavado and Cavado basins, both in the north, and an increase in flows in the tributaries of the Ribeiradio and in settlements downstream of the dam and the Agueda tributary, in the river basin Vouga (Center).
Taking into account the weather forecast, Civil Protection also warns about instability of slopes and the risk of landslides and collapses, slippery road surfaces due to possible layers of water, falling trees, utility and energy poles, damage to installed or suspended structures and difficulties. drainage in urban systems, especially during periods of high seas, “which can cause flooding in historically most vulnerable areas.”
As a preventative measure, ANEMC recommends unblocking rainwater drainage systems and removing aggregates and other objects that may become entangled or obstruct the free flow of water, and properly securing loose or suspended structures, such as scaffolding and “placards.”
Civil Defense also recommends caution near forested areas, coastal areas and coastal areas that are historically more vulnerable to flash flooding, “avoiding movement or presence in these areas”, driving cautiously, not crossing flooded areas and paying attention to information received from meteorology and readings from the Civil Defense and Security Forces.
