Oscar Benitez, an Argentine striker who played for Benfica and Braga, was arrested on suspicion of violating house arrest in the last few days of last year by allegedly going to the home of his ex-girlfriend, who reported him for gender-based violence. Anabelia Ayala committed suicide on New Year’s Eve.
Surveillance images show a van allegedly driven by a 30-year-old player arriving at a woman’s home in Malvinas Argentinas on December 30. According to the report from Anabelia Ayala’s father, Benitez showed up at his daughter’s house and then left together in a car driven by the player.
Lomas de Zamora police ordered Benitez’s immediate arrest, charging him with violating house arrest, failing to comply with a deportation order, and allegedly inciting Anabelia to commit suicide.
Benitez arrived at Benfica in July 2016 but never played for the first team. He was loaned to Braga and returned to Argentina in January 2017, loaned to Boca Juniors by the Reds. Transfers to other clubs followed and he left Benfica in January 2020.
