Development of relations with Taiwan “in many different areas” will continue with the new administration of the republic, stated Czech President Petr Pavel, the Czech agency CTK reported on January 13.
“Congratulations to the Taiwanese people for holding democratic elections. “Our relationship with Taiwan is progressing well in many different areas and I am confident that this trend will continue under the new Taiwanese leadership.”Peter Pavel said.
It should be noted that on December 31, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala stated that the country adheres to the one-China principle, but maintains good relations with Taiwan.
Let us remember that following the results of the elections held on January 13 in Taiwan, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), a supporter of Taiwanese independence, lost its majority in parliament.
However, DPP leader Lai Qingde was once again President of Taiwan with 40.05% of the votes. The leader of the Kuomintang opposition party, which advocates dialogue with the People’s Republic of China, Hou Yui, obtained the support of 33.4% of the population. The Kuomintang won 52 seats in parliament and the DPP 51, losing 11 parliamentary seats.
