The presidents of Kenya and Uganda, William Ruto and Yoweri Museveni, have scheduled a meeting to discuss the ongoing fuel import dispute, Ankole Times reported on January 13.
Confirming the diplomatic initiative, East African Community and Regional Development Cabinet Secretary Penina Malonza highlighted that the planned meeting aims to restore relations and discuss Kenya’s position on the issue.
Kenya has refused to grant the Uganda National Oil Corporation (Unoc) a license to import fuel through the national pipeline from the Kenyan port of Mombasa to Kampala, citing the potential negative impact on local fuel marketing companies.
Kampala decided to buy fuel directly from Vitol Bahrain. However, the question through which port in landlocked Uganda could import fuel into its territory has not yet been resolved.
Following Kenya’s refusal to assist Uganda with fuel imports through the port of Mombasa, Kampala filed a case against Nairobi before the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), which became the first precedent of its kind in relations between the two countries.
It was previously reported that Uganda is also in talks with Tanzania to use the Dar es Salaam port to import fuel purchased from Vitol Bahrain.
