Diaa al-Kahlut was in the Gaza Strip in October with his wife and five children when he was surprised by Israeli forces. The journalist spent 33 days in custody, subjected to various physical and psychological torture. He describes his time in Israel’s hands as “hard and difficult.”
“I have some health problems because of my detention. My legs go numb, I always feel sleepy and I can’t switch off and forget the time I spent in prison,” he told Reuters.
The Palestinian, who worked as a correspondent for the Al-Arabi Al-Jadeed news agency, said Israeli troops forced him to undress and leave his clothes behind when he was arrested. During the days of her detention, Diaa al-Kahout was always handcuffed and blindfolded.
After al-Kahut identified himself as a journalist during interrogation, he was transferred to a detention center. He says he was attacked several times and heard soldiers laughing at him.
“I was attacked several times, my mouth was covered, and I heard seven or eight soldiers laughing at me and saying, ‘journalist, journalist,’” he says.
Al-Kahlut was eventually released and taken to Gaza through the Kerem Shalom crossing in the south of the Palestinian enclave. He was not reunited with his family.
The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 after Hamas attacked Israel. To date, more than 24,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel’s response.
