Yemen’s Houthi rebels fired an anti-ship cruise missile at a US destroyer in the Red Sea on Sunday, but it was shot down by a US fighter jet, Washington officials said.
It is the first Houthi attack recognized by the United States since Washington and London joined forces from other countries on Friday and Saturday to bomb rebel positions in retaliation for attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea.
The rebels are voicing their solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, where Tel Aviv forces are mounting a major offensive against Hamas in retaliation for the Islamist movement’s Oct. 7 massacre that killed 1,139 people, most of them civilians. according to the latest assessment by Israeli authorities.
