A group of 82 Ethiopian nationals were detained on Sunday morning in Manica, central Mozambique, for illegal immigration into the country, a police source told Lusa today.
“They were all undocumented,” said Mateus Mindu, a spokesman for the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Manica, adding that they were found in a cargo truck.
The spokesman said they were men aged between 14 and 45 who intended to “cross into Zimbabwe”, a country bordering Manica province, and then head to South Africa, also neighboring Mozambique.
Without giving a time frame, Mateus Mindu said that work was underway to repatriate 82 Ethiopians.
Mozambican authorities admit that the crime of trespassing is usually committed with the complicity of a tour guide, who charges large sums to guarantee the transport of these foreigners in trucks, usually bound for South Africa.
