The GNR, through its Financial Action Unit, detained two men who were in possession of 108,080 contraband cigarettes and 7.3 kilograms of crushed tobacco leaves in Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, police said this Thursday.
In a statement, GNR said that in addition to the tobacco, it also seized €2,130 in cash from the defendants.
The seizures occurred Tuesday following five search warrants: one at a warehouse, two at businesses and two at vehicles, he said.
The GNR also emphasizes that the value of the seized tobacco could reach 27,000 euros, and its illegal sale would cause a loss to the state in terms of tobacco tax (IT) in the amount of 22 thousand euros.
The accused, 57 and 63 years old, have criminal records for committing the same crimes, the police emphasize.
According to the GNR, the facts were transferred to the Department of Investigation and Criminal Affairs (DIAP) of Vila Nova de Gaia.
