Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov will travel to the capital of Angola on Tuesday, where he will meet with his counterpart Tete Antonio and Angolan President João Lourenço.
Lavrov’s arrival at the international airport named after February 4 is scheduled for 18:05 local time, and the official program will take place only the next day.
On Wednesday, the head of Russian diplomacy, accompanied by his delegation, will meet in the morning with Foreign Minister Tete Antonio, after which he will go to an audience with Angolan head of state João Lourenço.
At 12:30 the Russian minister visits the doctoral thesis. António Agostinho Neto, as well as the grave of the former President of Angola, Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who died on July 8 last year.
Shortly thereafter, Lavrov will go on a tour of the National Military History Museum and stop by the School of the Embassy of the Russian Federation before lunch.
The diplomat returns to Moscow on Thursday morning.
The foreign minister’s working visit comes at a time when Angola, having taken a neutral stance on the war in Ukraine, abstaining from voting on a UN resolution condemning the Russian invasion in March, joined in October with most countries that condemned Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian territories.
In recent months, Angola has been changing its foreign policy position, drawing closer to the United States of America and the European Union and distancing itself from Russia.
Also in mid-January, João Lourenço said the time had come for peace talks in Europe, once again calling on Russia for a final and unconditional ceasefire to create “the necessary negotiating environment” between the parties.
The head of the Angolan state called the war in Ukraine “a serious threat to peace and security” in Europe and the world, causing the largest energy, food and humanitarian crisis since the Second World War.
In April 2019, João Lourenço visited Moscow and addressed 450 deputies of the Duma (the lower house of the Russian parliament), calling for more business cooperation in areas that contribute to the diversification of the Angolan economy.
Quoted at the time by Jornal de Angola, the President of Angola spoke of public-private partnerships and Russian-Angolan joint ventures and recalled that “it is in times of crisis that friends are recognized”, hinting at the need for Russia to support Angola in its goal of freeing itself from the economy, practically dependent on oil revenues.
