The European Commission announced this Friday that two more planes carrying more than 80 tons of humanitarian aid for the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip are heading to Egypt with the support of Portugal.
“Humanitarian airlifts for the population of Gaza continue. Two European Union humanitarian flights are heading to Egypt with more than 80 tons of critical supplies provided by Portugal, France, Belgium and Italy, as well as our humanitarian partners ready to reach the people of Gaza in need,” European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic wrote in a social media post. X network (formerly Twitter).
In December alone, the European Union planned six humanitarian flights to send items such as hygiene products, medicines, medical equipment and even shelters to the Palestinian population after Israeli bombing devastated much of the enclave, leaving Palestinians with virtually no way to find places to stay – more than 60 % of houses destroyed and at least 80% of the population displaced within the territory.
Previous flights have taken part from Portugal, Belgium, Ireland, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Slovakia and Spain.
Since the beginning of October, Israel has launched a military operation that has provoked a humanitarian crisis in Gaza unprecedented in recent decades. Tel Aviv’s military response followed the October 7 attack by the Islamist movement Hamas.
The Israeli military intervention, initially supported by the international community, began to lose momentum when accusations emerged from non-governmental organizations and then some countries that Israel was not respecting international humanitarian law in a conflict that was considered to be a terrorist group and was being indiscriminately attacked. Palestinian civilians – more than 20 thousand people died in just two months.
South Africa, however, has requested that proceedings be brought before the International Court of Justice to hold the State of Israel accountable for the crime of genocide.
