Sao Tome’s president will attend the second-term inauguration ceremony of his Democratic Republic of Congo counterpart Felix Tshisekedi on Saturday, hoping pre-election disputes will be resolved through dialogue.
Speaking to the press at Sao Tome International Airport, Carlos Vila Nova said that in addition to representing the Sao Tome archipelago at the event, he would take the opportunity to “meet other heads of state, “maintain relationships” and see “different opportunities cooperation.”
Responding to Lusa’s question about the opposition candidates’ conclusions regarding the election results that brought victory to the DRC president for a new term, the head of state of Sao Tome said that democracy has the means to solve these problems.
“Competition becomes a kind of habit, sometimes for no reason, often for some reason. […] The important thing is that these processes in democratic countries have solutions, and I hope that the one that happened is the best,” said Carlos Vila Nova.
The head of state of Sao Tome emphasized that the election results of Felix Tshisekedi “speak for themselves,” saying that “President [da RDC] was re-elected by a very large margin,” so “any existing dispute is a matter of dialogue” to resolve it.
Carlos Vila-Nova noted that in terms of bilateral cooperation, “there are no concrete actions” between the two states, “but friendly relations are very good.”
“The Congo is experiencing a small conflict in its development, which is depriving it of concentration and desire to act in other areas. […] We also have situations that we are trying to overcome. The important thing is that each of our countries has found a path to development, and this requires work, effort and concentration on what matters most,” said Carlos Vila Nova.
The Sao Tome president will return to the country on Sunday.
