Viseu Hospital is testing more than 150 babies after a trainee nurse working in the midwifery service was confirmed to have a case of tuberculosis. The first 50 infants who have already undergone chest x-rays have shown no symptoms of the disease, the incubation period of which can be up to three months. An intern nurse working in obstetrics is undergoing treatment and her health is improving.
As soon as the positive case became known, Viseu Hospital developed a plan for a potential chain of infection involving 150 newborns. All babies who have been in the obstetric department over the past three months participate in the promotion. Despite the fact that the level of infection transmission is considered low, the hospital department decided to carry out screening.
Over the next 15 days, the babies will return to the pediatric ward of the San Teotónio de Viseu Hospital to undergo blood tests and a tuberculin skin test.
