One person was killed and 28 others were injured in a bus crash on Sunday morning in Zavala, Inhambane province, southern Mozambique, Mozambican police told Lusa this Monday.
The passenger transport bus “began to overtake a passenger car (…) and when trying to return to its lane, flew to the left and overturned on the bank on the same side,” the agency’s interlocutor said. Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Inhambane, Nersia Bata.
According to the police, of the 28 wounded, two are in serious condition, the rest are in serious condition, all of them were taken to the Zavalsky district hospital.
“It should be noted that there is still no indication that the victim may be transferred to hospital or whose life is at risk,” Nersiya Bata said, adding that the bus driver tested negative for alcohol.
In the same area on the 3rd of this month, at least four people were killed and 12 others were injured when a passenger minibus crashed.
Some organizations rate the level of road traffic accidents in Mozambique as high.
Mozambican authorities have pointed to speeding and drunk driving as the main causes of the accidents.
On average, at least a thousand people die on the country’s roads every year, according to data provided to Lusa by the Mozambican Association for the Assistance of Road Traffic Victims (Amviro).
