A seven-year-old child died on Sunday after being washed away by rainwater due to bad weather in the Montepuez region of Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique, an official said on Tuesday.
“We recorded a child under seven years of age being dragged away by rainwater who was playing on the riverbank and ultimately died,” said Montepuez district administrator Isaura Maquina, as quoted by Radio Mozambique.
According to the culprit, in addition to the death of the child, the rain in the area also affected some access roads.
In Mozambique, bad weather has killed at least 44 people this rainy season since October, including 19 in the Zambezia province in the center of the country, according to the latest data from the National Institute of Disaster Risk. Management and reduction (INGD).
INGD President Louise Mecke warned in November that natural disasters threatened 1.2 million people in the country and the institution faced a funding gap equivalent to €143 million.

Mozambique is considered one of the countries worst hit by climate change in the world, experiencing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, which runs from October to April.
The 2018/2019 rainy season was one of the harshest in Mozambique’s history, with 714 people killed, including 648 victims of Cyclones Idai and Kenneth, two of the largest to ever hit the country.
