The Israeli army said Tuesday that 21 soldiers were killed in the central Gaza Strip in the deadliest attack on Israeli soldiers in the three-month war against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas.
Soldiers were preparing explosives to demolish two buildings on Monday when a gunman used a grenade launcher against a nearby tank, causing the explosives to detonate prematurely, military spokesman Daniel Hagary said.
The buildings eventually collapsed with the soldiers inside.
Benjamin Netanyahu mourns death
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed regret over the death of 21 soldiers in the Gaza Strip and said the Israeli army will continue to fight until “absolute victory” over the Islamist group Hamas.
Netanyahu said on social network X that today was “one of the most difficult days since the beginning of the war.”
“For the sake of our heroes and for the sake of our own lives, we will not stop fighting until complete victory,” he said.
