The European Council on Foreign Relations expects a “sharp turn to the right” in European elections in June, with populist and Eurosceptic parties leading the vote in a third of European Union (EU) member states.
The ECFR study, based on polls and statistical models, predicts that the far-right Identity and Democracy (ID) and European Conservatives and Reform (ECR) party groups will make “significant gains” in the upcoming European Parliament elections scheduled for June 6 to 9.
Forecasts show that populist parties with deep-rooted Euroscepticism will take the lead in Italy, France, the Netherlands, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia.
