Israeli women taken hostage by Hamas are routinely sexually assaulted, some victims released under a temporary ceasefire have warned.
Aviva Siegel, who was kidnapped by the Islamist group’s soldiers in October and released during a humanitarian truce agreement in late November, has spoken out about what she saw “with her own eyes” during her captivity. Rape is something that cannot be forgotten.
“Hamas members bring inappropriate clothes and turn girls into their dolls. Dolls with which they can do whatever they want, whenever they want,” Aviva said, as quoted Israel Times, at a meeting for victims of sexual and gender-based violence during the war between Israel and Hamas.
“I can’t breathe, I can’t handle it, it’s too difficult (…) I’m still here. My body is here,” he explained.
During a meeting of survivors of wartime sexual violence, the Israeli government was criticized for not taking action to free the remaining hostages in the Gaza Strip.
“The hostages have done nothing wrong! We have no right to sit here, we have to scream and fight for them. Right now a man is being raped in the tunnel,” said Shir, Aviva’s daughter, who was also present at the meeting.
On the morning of October 7, Israel woke up to an alarm after a surprise attack by the Islamic group Hamas using rockets fired from the Gaza Strip. In addition to the reported deaths from the attacks, more than 200 people were taken hostage and war was eventually declared.
Following the agreement, Israel secured the release of the hostages, but more than 130 hostages are believed to remain in Gaza.
