Danish shipping company Maersk announced on Wednesday that two ships belonging to its North American subsidiary that were transiting the Bab el-Mandeb Strait had left the Red Sea after explosions nearby.
“During the voyage, both ships reported seeing explosions nearby, and a US Navy escort also intercepted several projectiles,” Maersk said in a statement, explaining that the US warships were being escorted into the Gulf of Aden.
Maersk said both ships were carrying cargo belonging to the US Department of Defense and State, as well as other government agencies, meaning they “received US Navy protection for passage through the strait.”
