Mozambique’s National Electoral Commission (CNE) said this Thursday that it will propose new dates for voter registration for the October 9 general elections, after the President of the Republic promulgates changes to the registration law.
“As soon as the specific revision of the voter registration law is announced, we will sit down and work on proposals for new dates,” CNE spokesman Paulo Quinica told Lusa.
“We won’t be able to do anything before. [da promulgação pelo chefe de Estado]“On a specific review of the voter registration law,” Quinica said.
The Assembly of the Republic of Mozambique approved on Wednesday a change to the voter registration calendar, paving the way for a change in voter registration dates for the October 9 general elections.
The change in the deadline for voter registration was approved in general and in particular by consensus of the three panels of the Assembly of the Republic.
The special revision of the Voter Registration Law extends an additional three months from the original six-month period during which voter registration must be carried out, counting from the date on which the President of the Republic announced the date of the general elections. held.
Filipe Nyusi announced last August that general elections would be held on October 9, and the government has already scheduled voter registration for February 1 and March 16, dates that will change depending on the specific revision of the law.
The proposal was submitted to parliament by the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo) bench, the party with a majority in parliament, which based the request on the need to prevent “coincidence of voter registration with rainy weather” and to stop “poor compliance by the population with voter registration rules.”
The document says that voter registration during the rainy season poses “logistical constraints related to production, placement of materials and equipment, especially in difficult to reach locations.”
Under Mozambique’s electoral law, voter registration dates are set by the government on a proposal from the CNE, and parliament must approve rules defining the deadlines that must be met in accordance with the electoral calendar.
Mozambique will hold its seventh general elections (presidential, legislative and provincial) on October 9, at a cost of about 6.500 million meticais (96.3 million euros), according to the allocations included by the government in the draft 2024 state budget.
