The Social Communications Regulatory Authority (ERC) has condemned SIC for violating the Television Act. The episode in question is an episode of Married at First Sight, aired on December 11, 2019 at 7:10 p.m., in which images of the contestants were shown in Cabo da Roca, “on the edge of a cliff above the sea in a no-crossing zone.” . The complaint to the regulator calls the sharing of the images an “unacceptable and unspeakable” act that could endanger “the lives of many young people who lack the conscience and responsibility to appreciate the stupidity of this grace.”
As a result, the ERC opened an administrative case against SIC, stating that this type of content, “likely to have a negative impact on the development of the personality of children and adolescents,” could only be broadcast from 22:30 to 18:00. morning and is accompanied by a “corresponding visual identifier” (red dot).
In its now published conclusion, the regulator believes that SIC acted “with unconscious negligence” by failing to show “a diligent analysis of the compliance of the content of the broadcast program (…) with current legislation, as a result of which it was broadcast without an explicit condemnation of the dangerous behavior of competitors.”
For violating Article 27, No. 4 of the Television Law, the Paço de Arcos channel faced a fine of between 20 thousand and 150 thousand euros. However, since the “conduct involves negligence”, the minimum amount is now 10 thousand and the maximum is 75 thousand euros, with the ERC deciding that the fine should be set at 12 thousand euros.
To the question CM The SIC did not comment on whether it would appeal this decision.
