Ukraine this Thursday demanded an international investigation into the downing of a Russian military plane carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war, accusing Moscow of providing false information about the incident that led to the deaths of 74 people.
On Wednesday, Moscow accused Ukrainian forces of shooting down the plane with a missile. Kyiv does not deny this accusation. Russia says the plane that crashed in the Russian region of Belgorod was carrying 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war who were to be exchanged for Russian soldiers, and ensures that Ukrainian military authorities were informed of the plane’s route 15 minutes before the attack.
Kyiv denies receiving any warnings and claims that a Russian air defense system was operating in the region at the time the plane crashed. “We can imagine several scenarios, including a provocation or the use of Ukrainian prisoners of war as cover for the transport of weapons and ammunition,” said a representative of Ukrainian military intelligence.
