This Friday, the United Nations accused Israeli forces of continuing to bomb areas they previously considered safe and issuing “chaotic evacuation orders” in the southern Gaza Strip, such as Khan Yunis.
“I have serious concerns that these chaotic evacuation orders will be effective in guaranteeing the safety of Palestinian civilians,” said Ajit Sungahi, the UN envoy to the region, adding that Israel was violating its obligations under international law.
“The situation (in the Gaza Strip) is close to disaster,” according to the head of the UN office in the occupied Palestinian territories, Ajit Sunghai, more than 100 days after Israel ordered troops into the enclave in response to Hamas attacks on Israeli soil on October 7.
Sungai, who visited Khan Younis in recent days, said people were facing an “unthinkable situation”.
The majority of civilians currently in the city are displaced: more than 1.9 million people have been forced to flee their homes since the conflict began, most of them in temporary shelters.
According to the same UN representative, the situation is being repeated in Rafah in southern Gaza.
“I saw displaced people forced by the Israeli authorities to leave their homes, without any hope of shelter, living on the streets, next to sewers,” Sungai said.
Israeli authorities continue to attack some areas they previously promised not to be involved in hostilities, such as the western region of Khan Yunis.
Sunhai also expressed concern about “violations” of international law.
“The blatant disregard for international law must stop. The violence must end,” insisted the spokesman, who also called for an “immediate” ceasefire and the release of all hostages, as well as progress towards a “political solution” to the conflict. a conflict that guarantees the rights of Israelis and Palestinians.
