The Lisbon City Council will not sanction the demonstration “Against the Islamization of Europe”, organized by groups linked to the far right and planned for February 3, a source in the municipality told Lusa this Friday.
“The Lisbon City Council does not authorize the demonstration planned for February 3, which was to cover several streets in Mouraria,” the same source said.
The decision is based on the opinion of the PSP, which “clearly highlights the high risk of serious and effective disruption of public order and peace.”
On Thursday, a Lisbon council source told Lusa that the municipality had already received information about the demonstration but was waiting for the PSP to emerge, noting that the process applies to all initiatives in the public space.
The organization of the march in Martim Moniz caused concern among the immigrant community, and anti-racist groups decided to prepare a demonstration of “people of all colors” for the same day and in the same area.
In parallel, anti-racist organizations are promoting an open letter entitled “Against racism and xenophobia, we refuse to remain silent,” in which they ask the President of the Republic, the prosecutor’s office and the police authorities to “stop withdrawing from this demonstration.” , for breaking the law.
The open letter has already gathered about 6,500 subscribers calling for a ban on the demonstration “Against the Islamization of Europe.”
