A fire that broke out on Saturday morning at the Trappist sisters’ monastery in Palasadolo, in the municipality of Miranda do Douro, destroyed the roof of the Casa de Acolhimento, where the nuns live.
It is believed that the fire started in the fireplace of the monastery’s reception room and quickly spread to the roof of the building, which was made of stainless steel, the covering was destroyed, and eventually the fire also affected two rooms next to the chimney.
There was no need to evacuate the monastery, since by the time the firefighters arrived, the nuns had already left “on their own.” There are no homeless people, but “the losses are great.”
The municipality provided an alternative accommodation option, but the nuns chose to continue living in the monastery, but in different rooms.
About 10 Italian nuns live in the monastery.
The alarm was raised at 6:30 a.m. and volunteer firefighters from Sendim, Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro battled the blaze.
The Republican National Guard (RNG) was also present at the scene. There were 31 operatives on the scene, supported by eight vehicles.
