The Portuguese men’s handball team will take part in a pre-Olympic tournament with Norway, Hungary and Tunisia with the aim of qualifying for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris after the conclusion of the African Handball Championship this Saturday.
The end of the African Championships with Egypt defeating Algeria (29-21) in the final and Tunisia in the bronze medal game allowed two of the three pre-Olympic games to be paired: Portugal in the third group with Norway, host Hungary and the Tunisian formation.
The first two teams from each “group” qualify for Paris 2024, with Portugal hoping to repeat their Tokyo 2020 performance at the tournament, which runs from March 14 to 17.
The Norwegians were sixth at the last World Cup and are theoretically the toughest opponent, although Portugal won their last meeting, at Euro 2024, 37-33.
Hungary, which took eighth place at the last World Cup, finished the last European Championship fifth, Portugal seventh, and Tunisia beat Cape Verde this Saturday in the fight for bronze in the African tournament (35-28).
France, the host of Paris 2024, Denmark, the reigning world champion, Argentina, the Pan American champion, Egypt, the African champion, and Japan, the Asian champion, who will join them on Sunday, have already qualified for the Olympics. Sweden or Germany, who will participate in the Olympic Games, will compete for bronze at Euro 2024, because the French and Danes will advance to the finals.
The remaining pre-Olympic games will see Spain, Slovenia, Bahrain and Brazil vying for two more places in one of the tournaments, while Croatia, Algeria and Austria will be joined by Sweden or Germany in the second.
