Two masked gunmen killed a man during Sunday mass at a church in Istanbul, Turkey, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said, as quoted by Reuters.
According to the minister’s statement published on the social network X (formerly Twitter), armed men attacked the Santa Maria Church in the Sariyer district at 11:40 local time (8:40 Lisbon time). As a result of the attack, one person died.
“KT, who was among those present at the mass, was attacked with firearms by two masked individuals and unfortunately died,” Ali Yerlikaya said, referring to the initials of the victim.
It was not immediately clear why the victim was targeted. The official did not say what weapon was used or whether there were other injuries.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed condolences and assured that all “necessary measures” had been taken to find the perpetrators.
Erdogan, who spoke by phone with a church priest and local authorities, assured that everything was being done to find the attackers “as quickly as possible,” according to the president, as quoted by AFP.
