Filipe Nyusi asks Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to continue supporting Portugal in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi this Sunday asked his Portuguese counterpart Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa that Portugal continues to support the African country in the fight against “terrorism” that plagues the province of Cabo Delgado.

“We are updating [o chefe de Estado de Portugal] about the fight we are waging against terrorism, because Portugal makes its maximum contribution through the European Union,” said Filipe Nyusi, addressing reporters.

Nyusi was speaking in Lisbon during a short stop in the Portuguese capital on his way to Rome, where he will attend the Italy-Africa summit.

Mozambique’s head of state said he called on his Portuguese counterpart to ensure Portugal maintains the “spirit” of helping fight armed groups operating in northern Mozambique for more than six years.

Portugal has “trainers and instructors” involved in training Mozambican defense and security forces, and “we encourage them to continue in the same spirit,” Filipe Nyusi added.

Both presidents also focused on the wars between Russia and Ukraine and Israel and Hamas in Palestine.

Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group, leading to a military response from July 2021 backed by Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). liberation of areas near gas projects.

The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and nearly 4,000 people have died, according to the ACLED Conflict Recording Project.
