Israel’s ambassador to Portugal, Dor Shapira, criticized the presence of posters with anti-Semitic messages during a demonstration for housing rights on Saturday in Porto.
“Freedom of expression must have some restrictions, and it does not matter whether they come from the right or the left. Allowing posters like this to be posted on the streets of Portugal and remaining silent means allowing racism and hatred to win,” Shapira said on social media X on Sunday evening.
With his text, the ambassador published a photograph of people holding a sign that read: “We do not want to be tenants of murderous Zionists.”
Socialist leader Francisco Assis also condemned this Monday the presence of two anti-Semitic posters at a demonstration for the right to housing in Porto, and accused the posters’ authors of belonging to the “stupid and semi-literate” far left.
A protest for the right to housing, organized by a collective of more than 100 associations, took place on Saturday in at least 19 cities: Albufeira, Aveiro, Beja, Benavente, Braga, Coimbra, Covilhã, Évora, Faro, Funchal, Lagos, Leiria, Lisbon, Portalegre, Portimao, Porto, Setubal, Sines and Viseu.
This is the third protest for the right to housing organized by Casa Para Viver, which wants to mark the campaign for the early legislative elections that will take place on March 10.
