The Santa Maria Hospital will resume surgical activities, which it had to postpone for two weeks in order to respond to the need to admit patients to the emergency department, the deputy clinical director of the institution told Luse this Monday.
“At this point, as the situation eases, we will begin to return to normal activities related to the continuity of priority surgeries that have waiting lists and must be respected, and return to other surgeries such as hip replacements.” hernias,” said Lucindo Ormonde, deputy clinical director of the local health unit of Santa Maria, formerly the Central Hospital University of Lisbon Norte.
The Deputy Clinical Director recalled that over the past two weeks, the Santa Maria Hospital had to reorganize all surgical activities and medical hospitalization in order to respond to the very large number of patients in the emergency departments requiring hospitalization.
“A full surgical service, about 25 beds, was allocated for medical admissions, and there were changes in the allocation of types of operations,” with operations that were not immediately prioritized being delayed until two or three weeks later, he said. .
At the same time, “high priority” was given to outpatient surgery, which did not require consideration of the need for hospital beds.
“Now that we will again stop and reorganize the services, and also restore the surgical service that was allocated to medicine, we will restore surgical activity,” stressed Lucindo Ormonde.
Therefore, he said, “during this week we hope to normalize the hospital in terms of logical prioritization of the need for medical beds, as we have done before.”
Although this has “significantly alleviated” the need for medical hospitalization, the specialist stressed that they must be “always on alert.”
“Even though we predict a significant improvement and normalization of flow, we are always ready to introduce any contingency plan, but in any case we refuse the contingency plan,” Lucindo Ormonde said.
