According to the Emigration Report, at the end of 2022, a total of 1,387 Portuguese were detained abroad, three of them for crimes against the state/terrorism, although the main reason for detention is drug-related crimes.
The document, prepared by the Emigration Observatory and Rede Migra, states that ten more Portuguese were arrested abroad last year than in the previous year.
In Europe, the UK has the highest number of arrests (312), followed by France (248), Spain (180), Switzerland (179), Germany (120) and Luxembourg (116).
There were 124 nationals detained outside Europe, with Brazil continuing to be the country with the highest number of nationals arrested outside Europe (40).
The vast majority of those arrested are male, and the majority of arrests for which the cause is known are for drug offences, followed by crimes against the person (132), sexual offenses (54) and murder (34).
The report’s authors note “a slight decrease in the number of people detained in preventive measures (nine fewer), consolidating the number of people in actual prison (397 more).”
The same document states that in 2022, 267 Portuguese citizens were expelled, expelled or deported to Portugal, of whom 131 came from countries of the European Union, European Economic Area and Switzerland: Germany (nine), Belgium (six), Spain (23 ). ), Finland (six), France (54), Iceland (one), Luxembourg (21), Norway (three), the Netherlands (four), Czech Republic (one), Sweden (one) and two from Switzerland.
The remaining 136 citizens who were expelled, expelled or deported were in countries around the world: Andorra (three), Angola (two), Canada (38), United Arab Emirates (one), USA (19), Philippines (one) . Kuwait (one), Mexico (eight), Mozambique (five), Great Britain (51) and Venezuela (seven).
The Portuguese State has granted asylum to 11 Portuguese citizens in such situations, from Belgium (one), Canada (two), USA (two), France (one), UK (two), Sweden (one) and Switzerland (two). .
The 2022 Emigration Report was prepared by the Emigration Observatory and Rede Migra, within the Center for Research and Sociological Studies (CIES-IUL) of the Institute of the University of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL).
According to this report, approximately 60,000 Portuguese emigrated in 2022, with Switzerland being the main destination for these citizens.
