Two workers died early this Monday evening at sites in the Western Sea, the former naval shipyards of Viana do Castelo. The information was confirmed in CM Retrieved from Vivian Firefighters.
The workers, aged 35 and 20, both Cape Verdean nationals, were dismantling the ship when the crane broke off and caused the victims to fall.
The commander of the port of Viana do Castelo, Captain Serrano da Paz, confirmed the information about the deaths and the message to the Ministry of Justice.
The victims fell from a height of 12 meters.
An alert was issued to authorities around 7:50 p.m.
Firefighters from Viana do Castelo, VMER from Viana, Barcelos, as well as an INEM and maritime police ambulance arrived at the scene.
Volunteer firefighters from Viana do Castelo took the bodies to the office of the Forensic Institute.
The captain of the port of Viana do Castelo added that the families of the workers have already been informed about the incident.
A team of INEM psychologists was mobilized to the scene.
Entity with Jurisdiction over Shipyards Begins Investigation
Martifer launched an internal investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
The captain of the port of Viana do Castelo, the entity with jurisdiction in the area of the Martifer shipyards, Serrano da Paz, explained that two men were working on a lifting platform when they fell from a height of 12 meters.
Serrano da Paz said the case has been reported to the Ministry of Justice and will be referred to the Directorate of Labor Conditions (ACT).
