A vehicle allegedly deliberately drove into a cafe in Monforte (Portalegre) on Monday evening, hitting five people and causing six injuries, a GNR and civil defense source said on Tuesday.
A source from the Subregional Command for Emergency Situations and Civil Protection of Alto Alentejo told Lusa that the warning was issued at 21:44 on Monday.
Four people – three men and a woman – were treated on the spot, one seriously wounded and one lightly wounded were taken to Portalegre hospital, a source in the sub-regional command said.
According to GNR, the 38-year-old driver of the car was seriously injured.
“There are suspicions that the driver deliberately drove a car into the establishment,” partially destroying the cafe and killing five people inside, the Guarda source added.
According to him, due to these suspicions, the judicial police were called to the scene to investigate the incident.
“The vehicle smashed the front door and window of the cafe and caused other damage inside the establishment,” before colliding with another parked vehicle, according to a PNP source.
As a result of the incident, 19 first responders were mobilized to the scene, supported by eight fire engines from Monforte and Arronche and the GNR.
The Alto Alentejo Subregional Emergency and Civil Protection Command initially said the collision took place at Estrada Nacional 369 in Monforte.
