Communist leader Joao Oliveira said this Wednesday that he is confident that the CDU will be able to re-elect two MEPs and even strengthen its presence in the European Parliament (EP), discounting forecasts that indicate that the PCP will fail the elections.
“Our starting point is precisely to contradict these forecasts and find a line to increase our intervention, which is also absolutely necessary at the electoral level,” João Oliveira told reporters at the European Parliament in Brussels.
The former parliamentary leader of the PKP added that “this view is based on reality.”
“Talking to associations of farmers, fishermen, young people, pensioners, artists, intellectuals, people from the most varied fields of activity and the most varied interventions in Portuguese society, we find widespread acceptance of our intervention, and in many places even support for it in various electoral battles [incluindo legislativas]” he added, acknowledging that these are “solid elements on the ground.”
Accompanied by former MEP João Ferreira and two MEPs in the current legislature, Sandra Pereira and João Pimenta Lopes, the head of the CDU’s European list will take part on Thursday in a conference organized by the left in the European Parliament.
“Given the extremely valuable work we have done and which is recognized nationally and European […]“I would say that, naturally, the prospect is to increase the number of votes as a percentage, as well as the number of mandates,” he said.
