“The meeting with the President of the European Commission, whom we thank for the productive exchange of ideas, allowed us to reaffirm our common faith in the spirit of the European project, against the threats of the far right and in the uncompromising defense of democratic values,” wrote Pedro Nuno Santos on the social network Instagram, accompanying the publication photo with Ursula von der Leyen, who belongs to the European People’s Party (PPE), a center-right political group that also includes the SDP and SDS-PP. .
This Wednesday the Socialist General Secretary took part in a meeting with European Socialist officials in Brussels.
Pedro Nuno Santos praised his predecessor António Costa, who is also in Brussels for an extraordinary European Council meeting on Thursday to try to break Hungary’s impasse in approving an overhaul of the European Union’s multi-year financial framework, including 50 billion euros in support for Ukraine .
According to the PS secretary general, Costa is one of the “most respected and admired political leaders at European level, and this is a reason to be proud.”
“The weight of this responsibility is enormous, the realization of reality and that I am the successor of a great political leader in Portugal and Europe,” he added.
In front of a group of representatives of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats (S&D) in the European Parliament, the leader of the Portuguese Socialists rejected any participation of the far right in political decisions.
“We are absolutely clear: when it comes to the far right, no means no. No coalitions, no parliamentary agreements, no hidden backroom deals, no hard copies of their hard-line agenda,” he said.
