The Brazilian government launched an investigation into an alleged oil leak from a Panamanian ship in September 2023, Reuters reported on February 2.
The non-governmental organization Arayara Institute reported on February 1 that satellite images showed the apparent area of the oil spill was 170 square kilometers. A commission of inquiry is seeking information about an alleged oil spill from a tanker off its northern coast.
The preliminary assessment is that the potential leak may have originated from a Panamanian ship that is involved in environmental issues, the institute said in a statement.
The executive secretary of Brazil’s Environment Ministry, Joao Paulo Capobianco, told reporters that the government was seeking more information and monitoring. “Suspected oil spill”.
Capobianco said preliminary information collected by the government indicates a potential oil spill in international waters off the coast of Brazil, although that information needs to be confirmed.
The government planned to contact the International Maritime Organization and coordinate with the Brazilian Navy to find out which vessels were in the area at the time of the alleged incident.
